An early strike from Paul McQuade was enough to take Cowden off the foot of the table with a narrow win over neighbours Raith Rovers at a wet Central Park.

Cowden started the game brightly and after just three minutes Ferguson ran through on goal but saw his 20 yard drive just go wide of the target.

Four minutes later however he got what proved to be the match winner when O'Brien lobbed the ball over the visiting defence for McQuade  to who lobbed the ball into the far corner from ten yards.

Weir came close to getting an equaliser for Raith when he headed a Sloan cross just over the bar while at the other end Ferguson tried his luck from long range but the ball drifted wide.

Midway through the opening period McKay had to be at his best to deny both Sloan and Bryce while former Cowden goalie O'Connor pulled off a good save from McCabe following a good build up from Brett and McQuade.

Just after the half hour Brett and McQuade combined once more to set up Wallace who shot just wide.

Soon after McQuade met a Ramsay cross but was denied by O'Connor as we looked to extend our lead and six minutes from the interval the Rovers custodian once again denied McQuade turning his shot round the post.

The visitors came more into the game in the second half as they pressed for an equaliser and midway through a long range shot from Sloan took a deflection off a home defender but spun over the crossbar.

With 20 minutes to go Bryce broke through on goal but his shot from the edge of the box was well saved by McKay and soon after the Canadian denied Drummond saving his header from a Sloan corner.

As the game went into the closing stages Ferguson went on a good run up the right wing before cutting in and sending a shot towards goal which was turned for a corner by O'Connor. Whatley then tried his luck from 20 yards but his shot was held at the second attempt by McKay.

With six minutes to go Rovers had their best chance of the night when Bryce picked up on a clearance by the keeper and held off his marker before charging towards the Cowden goal however his shot from just inside the box went over the bar.
