Alloa Athletic 1  Cowdenbeath FC 0

Date: 8th December 2009 Kick off: 7:45pm
Competition: Scottish Cup Referee: Brian Colvin
Venue: Recreation Park Attendance: 423

A goal two minutes from time for substitute Mark Gilhaney saw us crash out of the Active Nation Scottish Cup at a rainy RecreationPark tonight.

There was one change to our starting line up from the original tie with Craig Winter dropping to the bench with Brian Fairbairn coming back into the starting XI.

In a game between two evenly matched sides clear cut chances were few and far between.

Walker just shot wide of the target for the Wasps early in the first half while at the other end a McBride shot was well held by Crawford following a cross from Fairbairn. Ramsay then went on a good run but his shot was smothered by the keeper.

As the opening period drew to a close a clearance from Hay fell to Scott but Armstrong headed clear to keep the score level.

The second half opened with Wardlaw shooting just over the bar while a free kick from Fairbairn went wide of the target.

With 14 minutes to go we almost broke the deadlock when a well hit 20 yard free kick from McBride clipped the inside of the post.

As extra time loomed Mark GILHANEY broke the deadlock when he picked up a loose ball to shoot home from close range.

Danny Lennon spoke to the Blue Brazil Online after the game:

"It's very disappointing to exit the Scottish Cup but I cant fault the players work rate or application. We tried to play football and kept the ball on the deck - my only criticism would be that we did not move the ball quick enough at times and failed to use the wide areas to our advantage.

"We defended very well again and did not look like losing a goal. It was going to take something special or a lucky goal and unfortunately it was the latter on this occasion.

"All in all It was a tight game with not much between the sides. However, we had the majority of possession and the better of the limited chances on the night but if you don't score you don't win football games.

"Credit to Alloa. They worked hard and made themselves very difficult to break down.

"We will dust ourselves down and get ready for Stenhousemuir on Tuesday night."
