Cowdenbeath U'20s 2   1

Date: 16th February 2014 Kick off: 12:00pm
Competition: Youth League Referee: Mr Kyle Hall
Venue: Dunfermline High School

Playing their first game for two months the under 19s opened the League Cup campaign with a hard fought win over Stirling Albion at Dunfermline High School on Sunday afternoon.

The Binos went into the game as group leaders having beaten East Fife the previous week and with the strong wind behind them had the first chance on goal after just four minutes when Cunningham shot over the bar.

Both keepers were then called into action as Lee denied Anthony while at the other end Hunter held another Cunningham effort.
Soon after Albion’s Cochrane fired in a low 20 drive yard which was saved by the Cowden last line before Lee once again blocked an Anthony effort.

With the strong wind behind them the visitors then tested the home goal with a few long range shots from Cochrane and Munn both of which were off target.
Nine minutes from the break it was Cowden who broke the deadlock when Lynas slotted the ball to Ben ANTHONY who saw his initial shot blocked by Boyle but when the ball broke to him he slotted home from a tight angle.

Johnston then saw a shot parried by keeper Lee before the visitors drew level in 39 minutes when Derek MURRAY fired in a shot from seven yards which Hunter was unable to keep out despite getting a hand to the ball.
Five minutes into the second half Stirling had the chance to take the lead when Sutherland fouled Sandy Cunningham in the box but the Albion frontman saw his spot kick saved by Hunter.

Soon after, Cowden came close to restoring their lead when a Callaghan corner was met by Hainey whose header was blocked on the line by Lee.
However with 14 minutes to go Craig JOHNSTON broke through the home defence to fire the ball past Lee from eight yards for what proved to be the winner.
