Berwick Rangers 0  Cowdenbeath FC 5

Date: 3rd August 2013 Kick off: 3:00pm
Competition: Communities Cup Referee: Crawford Allan
Venue: Shielfield Park Attendance: 465

A hat trick from Kane Hemmings ensured our safe passage into the second round of the League Cup at Shielfield Park.

He proved to be no match for the League 2 side who had beaten Championship side Livingston in the Ramsdens Cup the previous week.

It was an injury and suspension hit squad which headed south and Hemmings was one of five changes made to the starting line -up which had lost to Dunfermline. New keeper Grant Adam went straight into the side along with Dean Brett, Colin Cameron and Kyle Miller.

Hemmings had the first shot on goal on a Sunny afternoon after two minutes but his strike was easily gathered by home keeper Grant.
With eight minutes gone Berwick’s Ronald sent over an in-swinging corner which was confidently gathered by Adam.

Seven minutes later from another home flag kick by Currie Hoskins headed just wide of the Cowden goal and a minute later at the other end Hemmings set up McKenzie who beat a defender before firing in a shot from the edge of the box which flew just over the bar.
Then in another Cowden attack Morton sent a shot from the right wing just over the target.

Just past the half hour mark Morton had a crack at the Berwick goal with a 35 yard free kick but his effort went just over.
Twelve minutes from the break we had a great opportunity to break the deadlock when Russell sent over a cross to Hemmings but keeper Grant done well to block his close range shot.

Two minutes later however Kane Hemmings eventually broke the deadlock when he flicked home a Morton cross from close range.
He then only had to wait another two minutes to double his tally when he slotted home after being set up by Miller.
The Borderers opened the second half looking to get back into the game and Hoskins had a shot blocked by the Cowden defence.

However we went further ahead in 49 minutes when a Morton corner fell to Armstrong in the box and after his shot was blocked by a defender Kyle Miller fired home the rebound.

We then went in search of more goals and minutes later Hemmings sent an angled shot across the face of the home goal, while a McKenzie free kick was parried to safety by keeper Grant.

The fourth goal eventually came in 72 minutes when Greg Stewart, who had replaced Russell, scored with his first touch of the ball after a good build up from Hemmings and Adamson.

With the game won 16 year old Liam Dunn was handed his first team debut when he replaced Cowan for the closing three minutes.

Two minutes from time a perfect day for Hemmings then closed when he bagged his first senior hat trick.

A McKenzie shot was blocked by Grant and when the ball fell back to him he sent in a cross to Hemmings to head into the empty net.

As time wound down Callaghan, who had replaced Morton, fired in a free kick which was saved by Grant.
