Two early goals from Lewis Coult and Greg Stewart as well as a late penalty from Marc McKenzie saw us earn our first win of the season at the Bet Butler Stadium to move off the foot of the table.
There was one change to the side which had beaten East Fife in midweek with Colin Cameron returning to the line up to replace Lewis Milne.
It was the Sons who had the first chance of the afternoon when Devlin sent over a cross to Gihaney who fired his shot over the bar.
The opening goal came after nine minutes when Stewart flicked the ball onto Lewis Coult who slipped his marker and slotted a low ten shot past Grindlay and into the bottom corner of the net.
The Sons retaliated with two free kicks by Agnew into the Cowden box which were cleared by the defence.
With 17 minutes gone Greg Stewart put us two goals up when he picked up a McKenzie cross and side footed Lithgow before curling his shot past the keeper from the edge of the box.
Dumbarton came close to pulling a goal back when Fleming fired in a low shot which was held by Flynn, while Lister came close to reducing the deficit of a couple occasions.
Five minutes from the break Agnew fired in shot which was turned over the bar by Flynn and the opening period closed with a Stevenson free kick going wide.
The second half saw the hosts have plenty of possession, with their best chance of a goal coming midway through the half when an another Agnew free kick was well saved by Flynn, but the Cowden defence held firm and we added a third goal with nine minutes remaining when Marc McKenzie was brought down on the edge of the box by Forsyth and sent Grindlay the wrong way with the resultant spot kick.
