Competition: Irn-Bru 2nd Division Referee: David Summers

Man of the Match:

After losing their opening games the previous Saturday both sides were anxious to get their first win of the campaign on board. There were four changes in the Cowden starting XI. Both Kenny Adamson and Dene Droudge were suspended after their red cards against Arbroath. Mark Ramsay was sidelined with injury while Scott McBride dropped to the bench. Scott Linton, Jon Robertson and John Dempster returned to the side while Peter Bradley made his first team debut.

The turning point of the 90 minutes came after eight minutes play when for the second successive Saturday we were reduced to ten men. Keeper David Hay, who was making his 150th appearance for us against his old side, was given a red card by referee Somers after being judged to having fouled Harty. Back up keeper Kris Bower then replaced Fairbairn for an unexpected debut. City’s McAllister took the resulting spot kick but he blasted the ball high over the bar.

Cowden almost grabbed an opener after 21 minutes when a drive from Wardlaw was deflected over the bar for a corner.

Ten minutes later the home side opened the scoring when King worked his way in from the left to send a pass to Harty who back heeled the ball into the path of Steven Canning (Goal, 31 mins) who fired a right foot shot into the top corner of the net.

Five minutes from the interval Cowden grabbed a deserved equaliser when a McQuade free kick was headed on by Wardlaw to John Dempster (Goal, 40 mins) who volleyed the ball past Nelson.

As the opening period drew to a close Stein was unlucky not to add to our tally, seeing keeper Nelson off his line he fired a 45 yard effort towards the home goal but it went inches over and to the custodian’s relief landed on the roof of the net.

Ten minutes into the second period we were forced to make a change when Warlaw took a knock and was replaced by McCabe.

On the 67 minute mark City restored their lead when they were awarded their second penalty of the afternoon. A forward pass by Janczyk bounced off McCabe’s arm and Ian Harty (Goal, 67 mins) fired home a low spot kick, although Bower guessed the right way the shot was too powerful for him to get a hand to.

The home side then wrapped up the points with 12 minutes left on the clock. Rory McAllister (Goal, 78 mins) out ran the Cowden defence before lobbing the ball beyond Bower.

As well as Hay’s red card King and Fusco of the home side were booked.

Danny Lennon spoke to the Blue Brazil Online after the game:

"I thought we competed well again but once again an early controversial red card has cost us. We had to change out game plan after going down to ten men yet again the boys did themselves proud and could have gone in at haft time a goal up.

"The 2nd penalty was soft and it was always going to be difficult to get back into the match but the team never threw the towel in. If we keep that level of performance the rewards will come.

"Young Peter Bradley came in for his debut at centre half and put in a good performance after a nervy start."
