Biography:

Willie Reid (Inside Left, 1937-40) - In September 1937, Ashfield inside-left Willie Reid was signed by Cowdenbeath. Willie 'Happy' Reid immediately became a fixture in the first team at Central Park and proved to be a hugely influential figure in midfield. At the end of season 1937/78, Arsenal envisaged Reid filling the mantle of the now retired Alex James. However, Arsenal's bid was declined after Reid indicated his desire to stay with Cowden. The next season brought Cowden's record breaking Division 2 championship success. During the War, Willie played for Airdrie, Falkirk and Dumbarton. In 1946, he joined St Mirren and the return to peacetime football saw Willie operating as a wing-half in the late 1940's and early 1950's with 'the Saints'. He was selected as a reserve for the Scottish League in 1949. Later, Willie took over the post of manager of St Mirren and his side won the Scottish Cup in 1959. Then he managed the Norwich side which won the 1961/62 League Cup. Willie though was homesick and came back home. He died in Troon in 1975.
