Biography:

Willie Philp (Centre Forward/Right Half, 1914-20) - Willie Philp made his name in Fifeshire junior circles before going to play in the USA. Willie played for New York Celtic and also represented the USA. Late in 1913, he returned to Scotland and played trials for Dundee and Kirkcaldy United. Cowdenbeath saw him in these games and stepped in to obtain his services. Willie quickly solved Cowdenbeath's centre-forward problem. He was well built with good ball control and skill and soon became a favourite at North End Park. In March 1914, Cowden clinched the 2nd Division championship for the first time and celebrated in style with a 7-0 thrashing of Dundee Hibs in their last league fixture of the season. Philp gave a consummate display of centre-forward play in this match and scored 5 times. A year later and Philp's 2 goals in a 3-1 win over St Bernards gave Cowden their second successive Division 2 title. Throughout the War years, Willie remained a heavy goalscorer and also proved to be an excellent wing-half. The versatile Philp remained a keyman after the War until he left to return to the USA in 1920.
