Billy McLauchlan (Right back, 1968-72) – Signed from Greig Park Rangers, Billy McLauchlan made his debut in 1968 at Brechin. He was farmed out to Jubilee Athletic but soon became a virtual ever present in the Cowden side for 3½ years. In March 1969, Billy scored the only goal of his Cowden career - a blockbuster to give us a 1-0 win at Hampden v Queen’s Park. His strengths were at the other end of the field. Billy was tall, good in the air and a strong tackler. He liked to overlap up the right wing and specialised in a highly effective sliding tackle. McLauchlan was a stand out in the promotion winning side in 1970 and also looked comfortable in Division 1. His play attracted an array of admirers with Rangers being credited with an interest. His form looked set to earn him a move on to higher things. Sadly, in May 1972 tragedy struck when 21 year old Billy was electrocuted in an accident at his home in East Wemyss. Life in East Wemyss came to halt on the day Billy was buried. Over 1,000 mourners were in attendance including the players, management, directors and many supporters of Cowdenbeath FC. His teammates acted as pall bearers.
