Biography:

Gordon ‘Gus’ Malone (Midfield, 1988-92) – Gus was a classy midfielder who allied skill with some steely tackling. He was capable of notching goals with spectacular efforts from long range. Born in Dundee, he went to Brechin in 1982 from Tayport Amateurs. In his 3 years at Glebe Park, Gus featured in the City side, which won the 2nd Division championship. Subsequently he went junior and was playing for Downfield when Cowden signed him late in season 1987/88. Gus proved to be a real asset and was an important and influential player in his time with the Blue Brazil. He was aged 32 when he helped Cowden win promotion in 1992. In Cowden’s disappointing 1992/93 season, he was transferred to Dundee St Joseph’s around the turn of the year. That commenced a long and successful second stint for Gus back in the juniors. Gus was still to the fore aged almost 42 playing at full back for Carnoustie Panmure in the 2001 Scottish Junior Cup final. He played on for a few more years as well. Gus’s league record for Cowden was 29 goals in 155 games.
