Craig Levein (Centre-back, 1981-83, Manager, 1997-2000) – A native of Aberdour, Craig was with Lochore Welfare when aged 17 he joined Andy Rolland’s Cowden. Levein rapidly made the breakthrough to the first team. His superior and athletic style made a lasting impression and he was off to Tynecastle at the tender age of 19 in return for a £40,000 fee. He was a member of the Hearts team which just failed to do the double in 1986. Craig’s classy play earned him 16 Scotland caps and he played in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. His career though was ended prematurely by injury. In 1997, Gordon McDougall asked him to take on the job as Cowdenbeath manager and Craig took the plunge. In time, he had a radical impact and his professional approach and organisation began to reap dividends. He built an entertaining side with just the right blend of youth and experience which went on to win promotion in 2001. Craig then managed Hearts, Dundee United., Raith Rovers and Leicester City as well as the Scotland national side. Now back in charge at Hearts.
