Biography:

Billy Laing (Centre forward/outside right, 1970-75) - As a schoolboy in Buckhaven, Billy Laing was capped by Scotland Schools. He joined Rangers from Greig Park Rangers. He was on the verge of a first team breakthrough at lbrox but was released in 1970. Andy Matthew then signed him on the eve of Cowden’s Division One campaign. Billy made his initial impact as a winger who was greased lightning. However, he subsequently played largely at centre forward and was to be the club’s top scorer in 4 consecutive seasons. Laing had a natural goal instinct and was a popular player with the Cowden fans. In his time with Cowden, he scored 69 league goals. Billy Laing was also the star of the Cowdenbeath Quizball team on BBC TV when Cowden lost 3-2 to Derby County in 1970. Billy later featured for Dunfermline, Lossiemouth, Berwick and Brechin before retiring to concentrate on his business interests. He initially had a thriving waste paper business in Leven and then moved into the licensed trade.
