Biography:

Davie Hughes (Inside forward, 1887-93) - The Cowdenbeath Junior FA was founded in 1886 with local businessmen providing subscriptions towards the purchase of a handsome trophy. This was the Cowdenbeath Cup, which was competed for until 2008. St Leonards were the first winners and their star was Davie Hughes. Cowden then signed him. Davie was a member of 4 Fife Cup winning sides and was capped several times by Fifeshire in inter-county matches. He though was dogged by ill-health. He missed a large part of season 1891/92 but was aided by a benefit match in which Cowdenbeath beat Raith Rovers 7-5. This match raised £13 for Hughes. However, poor health brought a premature end to Dave Hughes career with Cowdenbeath. In 1908, Dave Hughes died at the Alice Pit. Dave was living in reduced circumstances and sleeping in a boiler at the Pit. One night rags in the boiler caught fire and Hughes was suffocated - a tragic end to the life of a man then regarded by many as the finest exponent of football ever produced by the Kingdom of Fife.
