Joe Joins the 100 Club

Posted February 29, 2012

Joe Mbu made his 100th appearance for the Blue Brazil on Saturday and celebrated in familiar style with another man of the match champagne, as another clean sheet provided the platform for a crucial 1-0 victory over Brechin City.

Big Joe has formed a formidable partnership with John Armstrong during the club's most successful period in the modern era and was a key player in the back-to-back promotions from the Third to the First Division. That partnership has continued again this season with Cowden currently league leaders thanks, in no small part, to the meanest defence in the division.

The popular defender was signed by Danny Lennon in 2008 from Whitburn Juniors and has established himself as one of the bests central halfs in the SFL, after making the step up to the seniors later in his career. Mbu - who turned 30 on Valentine's Day - was with Hibernian, Alloa Athletic and Cowdenbeath as a youth player before turning out in the juniors for Armadale and Whitburn. He won a raft of honours at junior level including international recognition before Lennon made the wise decision to bring the player to Central Park.

The one area of Joe's game that is up for question is his goalscoring! He may not score many - as a ratio of one in every 50 games evidences - but his last goal was the opener in the memorable 3-0 win over Brechin City to clinch promotion to the First Division in May 2010. Another crucial goal to secure promotion will do just nicely!

Joe is in good company with Scott Linton and Jon Robertson also joining the 100 Club this season.

Tune into Blue Brazil TV to view a recent interview with Joe.
