Cowdenbeath 1 Brechin City 0

Posted February 25, 2012

Derek Lyle scored his first ever goal for Cowden as his crucial winner four minutes into added time secured three points and maintained our two point lead at the top of the Irn-Bru Second Division table.

A forgettable first half ended in stalemate but Lyle's late show - he deflected Greg Stewart's shot past Craig Nelson with his hip -  was the least Cowden deserved after dominating the second period. The score would have been more convincing but for a solid defensive display from the visitors with some fine goalkeeeping, three goal line clearances and the width of Nelson's post keeping us at bay until the the injury time winner.

The win, which was our 11th on home soil this season, sees us maintain our unbeaten home league record and a two point lead over Arbroath who won 3-1 at Stenhousemuir.

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS – COLIN CAMERON

“I honestly felt it wasn’t going to be our afternoon", said the Cowden gaffer.

"In the first half we played some good stuff for the first twenty minutes but then fell out of the game."

Cameron continued: “We turned the screw in the second half and Nelson had a great save while we had three efforts cleared off the line.

“Just when it looked like we were going to have to settle for a point we had a wee bit of luck when Greg’s [Stewart] shot struck off Derek’s hip for our goal.

“Its credit to the lads for keeping on going. They have the determination and desire to stay at the top of the league after working hard to get there.”

AFTER MATCH COMMENTS – JIM WEIR

“It was a sickener losing such a late goal. Cowden however were much better than us in the second half, although I felt we had to two best chances in the first period which both fell to Paul McManus."

Weir added: “Credit where credit is due. Tthey put us on the back foot but it is still a hard one to take.”
