The Blue Brazil's 2011/12 League Cup hopes ended after losing 4-3 on penalties to 2nd Division rivals Stenhousemuir. Colin Cameron's team were keen to make an early impression but it was the away side that broke the deadlock with only 4 minutes on the clock. Stewart Kean outjumped Kenny Adamson to head into an empty net after Youssef Bejaoui misjudged a cross from the right.
Cowden took a while to settle after the early set back but a double from Mark Ramsay (28 & 40) secured a slightly fortunate half-time lead.
Eric Paton levelled the scores 8 minutes after the break with Stenny's only real chance in the second half and the score remained 2-2 at full-time thanks to some excellent goal keeping from Chris McCluskey.
Cowden dominated extra time and Scott Linton looked to have found a deserved winner but the substitute shot wide with the goal gaping.
120 minutes of action failed to declare a winner but Stenhousemuir secured their place in the 2nd round draw after Cameron and Greg Stewart missed from the spot in the shoot out.
