Irn-Bru award for Greg

Posted April 19, 2011

March was a memorable month for Greg Stewart and the promising striker had further reason to celebrate after picking up the Irn-Bru Phenomenal SFL Young Player of the Month award.

Stewart, who celebrated his 21st birthday last month, started March on the bench but scored in 5 consecutive games to establish himself in the starting line-up. The Club's top scorer has continued to go from stength-to-strength with a further 3 goals in April to date to make it 9 so far in his debut season in the 1st Division.

Well done Greg!

Stewart joined the club from the amateur ranks in the summer after starring for Falkirk-based Syngenta in the Edinburgh under 21 league and has successfully made the jump from non-league to first division football. The striker was previously with Rangers and Hearts as a youth player but was released after being considered to be too small at the age of 15.

Following a spell out of football, Stewart starting banging in the goals again in non-league football and came to the attention of senior scouts and was invited to train with Falkirk and Stirling Albion. However, his big break came last summer when Head of Youth Development, Bobby Paterson, invited Greg to join Cowden for pre-season training. The promising striker took his chance with both hands to impress Jimmy Nicholl and earned a contract at Central Park.
