Raith Rovers 2 Cowdenbeath 2

Posted April 9, 2011

A late goal denied the Blue Brazil a deserved Fife derby win in a thrilling end-to-end game at Stark's Park.

Both sides contributed to a fine game of football and the encounter only remained goalless at the interval thanks to excellent goalkeeping from Ludo Roy (a last minute replacement for David Hay after the regular stopper injured his back on the morning of the game) and Andy McNeil.

It was only a matter of time, however, before the net was going to bulge and it was no surprise when the away team, who had dominated possession for good spells of the game, broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the break. Greg Stewart beat two men inside the box before beating McNeil at his near post with a drilled effort.

Rovers showed their championship credential by reacting quickly to the loss of the goal and were level within 5 minutes after Roy got a hand to Grant Murray's powerful header but the referee judged that the ball had crossed the line.

Cowden soon regained their composure, however, and took the lead again on 70 minutes after McNeil's clearance rebouned off Stewart and the striker accepted the gift to slot home into an empty net.

That looked like the winner but a scrappy effort from Mark Campbell with 2 minutes left on the clock ensured a dramatic finish before Gregory Tade almost won it for Rovers with seconds remaining.
