The Blue Brazil kicked-off the new season in the 2nd Division at home to Arbroath on Saturday and Danny Lennon's team more than held their own in their debut in the higher division but two controversial refereeing decisions proved costly.
Firstly Kenny Adamson was harshly shown a straight red card after only 12 minutes before Cowden were reduced to 9 men with 19 minutes remaining after Dene Droudge was shown a 2nd yellow card.
Cowden coped admirably with 10 men and looked the better team but Arbroath took advantage after Droudge's dismissal thanks to late goal from Barry Sellars (80) and Bryan Scott (84). New signing Scott McBride scored a last minute consolation goal from the spot.
