Despite opening the scoring the reserves went down to a second successive defeat against group leaders Livingston at Central Park.
After a goal less first half Dean Brett broke the deadlock three minutes after the interval when he picked up on a loose clearance and ran in on goal before slotting the ball past McDowall from 17 yards.
The visitors responded quickly however and grabbed an equaliser in 52 minutes when Chris Malone fired home a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards and ten minutes later Bobby Barr gave them the lead with a fine individual goal. The former Third Division Player of the Year picked the ball up just inside the Cowden half and beat several home defenders before firing home an angled shot from seven yards.
Livi then secured the three points with 14 minutes to go when Aaron Conway fired home a shot on the turn from 17 yards.
