Raith Rovers 0 Cowdenbeath 1

Posted July 24, 2010

The Blue Brazil got the new campaign and the new management teams regime off to a flyer with a 1-0 derby win over Raith Rovers in the first round of the MG Alba Cup.

Jimmy Nicholl was missing a number of players on his return to Stark's Park but his team gave their all and more than merited the win and subsequent progression into the second round of the competition.

The winning goal came after 58 minutes when the Rovers defence failed to clear their lines from a Scott Linton corner and John Armstrong fired home past David McGurn.

"I was looking for an indication of how we are going to do this year and was pleased with the display", said Jimmy Nicholl.

"It was only 90 minutes but the quality they showed and determination to win the game was great. The fitness levels are also very good which is credit to the players and the coaching staff.

"There were a few things that I was not happy with from the pre-season games but they took that on board and there wasn't a department I wasn't happy with today. There is still a lot to do and to learn but can't fault the commitment or determination.

"It was great to see the support out in numbers today so it was good to get a win for them."

The draw for the second round will take place at Hampden Park on Tuesday 27th July.
