A New Year often hansels change. The SPFL transfer window opened yesterday and following negotiations that have taken place over the last month or so Cowdenbeath FC captain Robbie McNab was transferred to Stirling Albion with a suitable transfer fee being paid over to CFC.
Robbie was now in the final months of his two year deal with us and has always had the ambition to return to the SPFL. Robbie of course was our Player of the Year last season and no-one could have given more to the Cowden cause than our skipper over the last 2 seasons. He gave his all in midfield, in defence and recently even up front - he was a real leader and earned the respect of everyone at Central Park.
We therefore offer our grateful thanks to Robbie for his major contribution to CFC and wish him all the very best now as he returns to the SPFL.
Cowdenbeath FC’s Football Operations Co-ordinator Colin Nelson provided us with some parting thoughts regarding our captain. "Sadly Robbie is moving on from the club. To provide clarity Robbie has had a clause in his contract since he joined the Blue Brazil which would allow him to move back into the SPFL if a Scottish League club offered a pre-agreed sum by way of transfer fee. Two SPFL clubs made such offers prior to the opening of the January transfer window and Cowdenbeath FC granted the necessary permission for transfer talks.
Robbie believed the opportunity to now get back into the SPFL was too big to turn down. Stirling is also more local for him for training etc and also for his own personal business.
I would like to make it clear that Robbie has gone above and beyond for this football club in his time at Central Park. He actually turned down SPFL offers earlier in the season when we had major injuries. He has been an outstanding player, captain and leader but first and foremost is a fantastic person.
It's always challenging losing a player of his calibre, however, work is underway and has been in progress for a number of weeks to try bring in some players to the club.
I'm certain everyone will wish Robbie well and he will be warmly welcomed back to Central Park at any time."
Robbie added "A message to say farewell but more importantly thank you - to everyone associated with the club from top to bottom. The support received on & off the park has be appreciated more than it may seem.
Due to this support and connection with the club, leaving would never be easy. Opportunities had came in the past and these relationships kept me here. Some opportunities make more sense than others and as bittersweet as it feels, I’m extremely excited for what’s ahead.
The last 18 months have reignited a love for football I thought was lost and when I signed, that’s what I was looking for.
A thanks to Donald, Margaret, Colin, John & Tom (among many, many others) who do as much as possible for the boys and a club they care deeply about.
A thanks to the gents from the Junction Bar for the support off the park by making donations to charities close to home and major thanks to David Allan who represented the club at a recent funeral of mine. Small gestures that go a very long way.
I’ve been proud to captain this team and know what it means to all those mentioned so wish them all nothing but success going forward."
