Ukraine Appeal

Posted March 4, 2022

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) today launched their Ukraine Appeal which will run for 14 days and donations are now being sought. Many will undoubtedly have been affected by the harrowing scenes from Eastern Europe and will wish to play a part in supporting the people of Ukraine. Cowdenbeath FC and Cowden in the Community are giving their full backing to this appeal and we are sure that our fans and the local community will get fully behind this most worthy of causes and look to make a difference by making a donation.

As the war in Ukraine escalates, so does the humanitarian crisis. Many of you may have been considering how best to respond in what is becoming a congested landscape. The DEC is a coalition of 15 of the biggest aid charities in the UK – including Red Cross, Save the Children, Christian Aid, Oxfam, International Rescue Committee and many more. The power of the coalition comes through their partnership with all 5 public service broadcasters, BBC, ITV/STV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky, who provide free TV and radio space to ask for donations.

The DEC is resolutely, politically neutral, and focuses solely on the provision of much needed humanitarian aid; financial donations to the DEC will be converted quickly into aid in Ukraine and neighbouring countries allowing for swift, effective and targeted response to the regions most in need. The money raised will be divided through a set mechanism to the members best placed to provide food, water, shelter, medicine in Ukraine and neighbouring countries in the coming days and weeks.

On Saturday, Cowdenbeath FC will be holding a bucket collection at the turnstiles for our derby match at Central Park v Kelty Hearts in order to raise funds for the Ukraine Appeal. Fans of both clubs can contribute on that day – all funds received will be remitted to the DEC to help the people of Ukraine. Kelty Hearts of course have a Ukrainian player with them at present whilst Andrew Barrowman of Cowdenbeath has Ukrainian ancestry on his mother’s side of the family.
