MATCH PREVIEW - ANNAN ATHLETIC (H)

Posted January 8, 2022

Subject to a 9.30am pitch inspection, it’s a belated start to our 2022 fixtures as we welcome Annan Athletic to Central Park for the second time this season.

Last Sunday’s Central Fife derby match was of course postponed after covid issues were found amongst the squad prior to a training session last Friday, which was also cancelled.

Our visitors managed to get into weekend action when they drew 1-1 with Stranraer at Stair Park despite playing 50 minutes with ten men after Charlie Barnes was sent off and will miss today’s match. Broque Watson had given the Blues and early lead and the home side missed the chance to double their advantage when Greg Fleming saved Grant Gallagher’s spot kick. Tommy Goss got an equaliser from Annan with two minutes to go to, although it ended a run of five successive wins Peter Murphy’s side are on an impressive run of one defeat in their last 11 games.

Third place Athletic, just two points behind second place Forfar, have won the two previous games between the sides this season. Their visit to Central Park back in August was a turning point in our season. Things started brightly with Robbie Buchanan giving us a half time lead. Two goals in the opening eight minutes of the second half with Tony Wallace, from the penalty spot and Iain Anderson turning the game on its head. Wallace then added a second goal nine minutes from time.

The return game at Galabank in October saw David McGurn take charge of the side and saw a Lewis Hunter goal 12 minutes into the second half separate the sides.

New signing Andy Barrowman goes into the squad along with Jacob Glass who has returned from America.

Lennon Watson has moved to Whitburn but his debut for them will be delayed as their match is off.

Annan will be without Michael Garrity who has retuned to Morton after a spell on loan at Galabank.

After Edinburgh City drawing 2-2 win Elgin City last night we are now 11 points behind the Moray side and Albion Rovers.
