MATCH PREVIEW - CIVIL SERVICE STROLLERS

Posted October 23, 2021

It’s the Scottish Cup Second Round and we welcome Lowland League Civil Service Stollers to Central Park with a 3pm kick off.

This will be only the third time that the sides have met in the Scottish Cup with the previous ties coming in season 1981-82. We were meant to play the First Round tie in mid December at Muirhouse but the match was postponed 23 times and didn’t take place until the January. On a Thursday afternoon we found ourselves 2-1 at the break with Ricky Clapperton hitting a brace for the hosts and Jim Liddle replying. Gordon Forest drew us level and Liddle got a second but in the dying seconds Charlie Spence headed home to make it 3-3.

The replay at Central Park saw a 6-1 win for us with Forest bagging a hat trick along with Davie Park, Billy Steele and Marshall also on target. Jeff Ashton got the Strollers consolation goal

To reach the Second Round this season the Strollers had to make the 406 mile round trip to face Golspie Sutherland with goals from Jonathan Moffat, Euan Valentine and Andy Johnston saw them safely through.

In the league it has so far been a successful one for Gary Jardine’s side who sit in third place equal on points with North Edinburgh rivals The Spartans. After an opening day loss at Dalbeatie they went on a nine game unbeaten run with saw wins over Edinburgh University, Bonnyrigg Rose, Rangers B, East Kilbride, Vale of Leithen and Cumbernauld Colts and draws with East Stirlingshire, Celtic B and Broomhill.

They then lost to The Spartans, their only defeat at Christie Gilles Park, but beat Stirling University, Newtongrange Star (in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup) and Gretna before going down to Bo’ness United. Since then they have won their last three games beating Caledonian Braves and Gala Fairydean Rovers in the league and Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale last Saturday in the South Challenge Cup.

The game see’s former Cowden favourite Joe Mbu return to Central Park as assistant manager with former back up keeper Mac Whyte a virtual ever present this season along with Euan Valentine.
