MATCH PREVIEW – BRECHIN CITY (H)

Posted April 26, 2021

It’s the penultimate home league game of the season and the ninth in April as we welcome Brechin City on Tuesday night with the earlier than normal kick off time of 7pm.

We go into the match knowing that avoiding defeat will see the Glebe Park side finish bottom of the table. Saturday’s win at Stenhousemuir put us 11 points clear of Michael Paton’s side who have all four post split games still to play after being the free team on Saturday.

Our previous meeting with Brechin in December saw a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Craig Barr and Ian Russell. Then last Tuesday the sides fought out a goal less draw at Glebe Park.

This was one of six points for City this season with the others coming from their only win of the season against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill back on the last day of October and draws with Annan (0-0) in December and 1-1 with Stenhousemuir three week’s ago.

Recent home league games with Brechin.

19/12/20 W 2-0 Barr, Russell
25/01/20 W 3-2 Allan, Thomas, Barr
31/08/19 W 2-1 Thomas, Mullen
09/04/16 W 2-1 Spence, Kane
14/11/15 W 3-0 Brett, El Zubadi, Spence

City’s last win at Central Park was in the Challenge Cup on 26th July 2014 when they beat us 3-1 in extra time after the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Sean Higgins had given us an early lead with Robert Thomson equalising. Alan Trouten and Ryan Ferguson then scored in extra time to give the League One side a Championship scalp.

Their last league win at Central Park came in a Second Division encounter on 29th March 2008 when goals from Darren Smith and Adam Nelson sealed the points for a City side which contained a young Michael Paton who was on loan from Aberdeen.

This was only one of two City league wins this century, although the sides spent many seasons in different leagues over the last 21 years.
