MATCH PREVIEW – ALBION ROVERS (H)

Posted November 21, 2020

We return to League Two action as we welcome Albion Rovers to Central Park.

Last season due to the early shut down we only played Rovers twice with both games taking place at Central Park. A Fraser Mullen penalty separated the sides in September 2019, whilst in March in our last home game before the lockdown Lewis Wilson opened the scoring for the Coatbridge side before goals from Craig Barr and Kris Renton secured the points for us.

The summer saw manager Kevin Harper leave the club to be replaced by Brian Reid. It has been a tough start for the new boss with six defeats in the opening league and Betfred Cup games, although one of the loses was a default 3-0 win for Hamilton last Saturday after Rovers had to withdraw from the Betfred Cup tie due to Covid issues.

The other cup games saw a 5-2 home defeat from Reid’s old side Ayr and a heavy home loss to Annan who ran out 5-1 winners. In their other game they drew 2-2 at Stranraer before winning the penalty shootout 15-14, a new record for Scottish Football.

In the league so far they have lost 3-1 and 2-0 to Stenhousemuir and Brechin respectively at Cliftonhill, while on the road they lost 2-0 to Queen’s Park but won 3-2 at Annan in their last outing. Top scorer is Matt Aitken who has scored 4 of their 9 goals so far.

Our own top scorer Brad Smith has now returned to Broughty Athletic along with team mate Graham Hay after their loan spells came to an end.

Former Cowden players in the Rovers squad are keeper Ryan Goodfellow and captain Aron Lynas.
