Walter Robertson

Posted April 9, 2020

It is our sad duty to report on the passing of former Cowdenbeath FC assistant manager Walter Robertson.

Wattie hailed from Buckhaven and his father played for and managed East Fife. As a youngster he enjoyed success playing for the famous Bayview Youth Club side.

Scot Symon signed him for East Fife in 1949 when he was 18. A left back he was 6 years with East Fife before moving to Forfar but he suffered an injury soon after which ended his career.

Walter though was best known in Cowdenbeath for the spell he enjoyed as assistant manager to Andy Matthew who was a good friend and former playing colleague. 50 years ago this month Cowden won promotion to the top flight when Walter was assistant-boss and he was especially delighted when the Cowdenbeath reserve side he had taken charge of won the East of Scotland League that very same month.

Walter was a special guest when the Cowdenbeath side of 1970 had its 40th anniversary reunion at Broad Street Bowling Club in 2010. For many years Wattie remained a regular spectator at Bayview but more recently had moved into a care home. Everyone at Central Park passes on their condolences to Walter’s friends and family at this sad time.
