Alloa Athletic 2 Cowdenbeath 1

Posted February 10, 2010

Alloa Athletic claimed top spot from the Blue Brazil on Tuesday night with a narrow 2-1 win at Recreation Park despite a strong second half showing from Danny Lennon's team.

There was not much between the top two in the first half but the home side edged it at the interval thanks to a goal from new signing Bryan Prunty after 16 minutes.

Cowden began to get a grip on proceedings after the break but we found ourselves two goals down when Alloa scored on the break via an unmarked Stuart Noble (58). The second goal really galvanised the Blue Brazil and we pegged Alloa back for the remaining 30 minutes but only had a Paul McQuade (70) goal to show for our efforts.

"The first half was reasonably even but Alloa got their noses in front with a good opportunist goal from Prunty", said a disappointed Danny Lennon.

"I thought we kept possession well in the opening 45 minutes without really hurting the opposition but in all honesty we didn't really get going until the 2nd half. From then on I though we controlled the game - particularly the final 30 minutes - but lost a very poor goal from our point of view from a long kick out from the keeper.

"The boys responded well though and kept at it but unfortunately could not find the second goal that our play deserved. Alloa had a couple of chances due to us chasing the game but Duff made some good saves.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the result but can take heart from the final 30 minutes and there were positives that we can take into the next game. We are well on course to meet our aims and objectives for the season and the boys have been outstanding for the club this season but it's undoubtedly a difficult spell for us. However, we have some strong characters in the dressing room and the players are learning, developing and growing together so we will dust themselves down and go all out to try and win the next game.

'The fans were fantastic again on Tuesday night and my message is to stick with us - the results will come again."
