Shields departs

Posted January 9, 2010

Midfielder Jay Shields has been released after two years at Central Park and is now free to sign for another club.

Shields was signed by Brian Welsh from Morton in January 2008 but could not help save the Blue Brazil from relegation to Division 3. The ex-Hibee was rejuvenated under Danny Lennon the following season and played his part in a successful campaign that ultimately led to promotion back to the Second Division. However, Shields was unable to break into the team this term due to the arrival of Craig Winter and the emergence of Jon Robertson.

Lennon does not expect much further transfer activity during the transfer window:

"I am happy with the squad and have great belief in the players here so I am unlikely to add further. I am looking to extend Scott McBride's loan deal until the end of the season while the return of McGregor, Mackay  and Dempster will significantly boost the depth and quality of the squad.

"Some more of our youngster may go out on loan in the coming weeks. It's important at this stage of their development to play regular football and test themselves at a more competitive level. Jon Robertson, Scott Linton and Dene Droudge were out on loan last season and the experience served them well for their successful transition into first team regulars.

"We have significantly reduced the wage bill over the last 12 months as it's a very challenging economic environment for football clubs. But despite tightening the belt we will continue to strive to improve the quality on the park and give talented young footballers the platform to flourish."
