MATCH PREVIEW - EDINBURGH CITY (A)
Posted November 18, 2016
Saturday afternoon sees us make the short journey over the River Forth as we meet Edinburgh City at Meadowbank Stadium in a Ladbrokes League Two encounter with a 3 p.m. kick off.
Although we have met City in a few friendly matches over the years at the stadium since they moved there in January 1997 this will be our first league visit to Meadowbank since December 1993 when we faced the old Meadowbank Thistle in what turned out to be a 1-1 draw.
Thistle of course moved onto Livingston, taking on a new name, and after their lease of the stadium expired in December 1996 City moved in the following month which allowed them to become members of the SFA and the rest as you say is history. A little remembered fact is Cowden's reserve side were the last team to play Livingston at the stadium.
Moving onto more recent times City were of course runaway winners of the Lowland League in successive seasons and eventually made it into the SPFL in May after beating East Stirlingshire in the play off.
It was a slow start to life in a new league for Gary Jardine's side but losing their first nine league and cup games and having to wait until match number 17 for their first win of the season in a Scottish Cup replay against league leaders Forfar at Station Park earlier this month with perhaps fittingly their top scorer over the last two seasons Ross Allum getting the goal.
After waiting for so long to break their duck City have went on to win their last two games at Montrose and at home to Annan with both games ending 1-0 and although still at the foot of the table are only two points behind us.
We have had a mini revival ourselves over the last fortnight with a 1-1 draw at Berwick which was followed by last Saturday's 2-0 home win over Montrose which saw their manager Paul Heggarty leave Links Park in midweek.
One of our three league wins this season of course came when the sides last met at Central Park back in August when goals from Kris Renton and Lewis Moore gave us a 2-0 win.
Former Cowden favourite Joe Mbu of course missed the game at Central Park due to suspension but will on doubt be relishing facing his old side at the weekend.
