U20s Win In Portugal

Posted January 12, 2016

hree first half goals were enough to see off Aldershot Town in the first of Cowdenbeath Development squad two matches as part of their Erasmus+ trip to Portugal.

Cowdenbeath were quicker off the mark than their National League opponents and after a spell of early pressure a through ball from Josh Wilson into the box found Cammy Muirhead with his back to goal. The striker did well to turn his marker and shot cleanly into the corner of the net.

The second goal came not long after when  overlapping left back Harvey Swann played a one two with Cammy Muirhead in the penalty area and shot past the Aldershot keeper.

The young Blue Brazil consolidated their dominance with a third goal midway through the first half. Declan Byrne was rewarded for chasing down a long through pass and as the Aldershot keeper came out to clear the ball Declan beat the goalie to the ball and slipped it past  him and into the net.

Aldershot got a goal back after half an hour when their striker pounced upon a loose ball in the six yard area and shot past keeper Shaun Donoghue.

The second half proved to be a much more even affair but despite both teams having further chances no more goals were scored leaving the Cowdenbeath Development squad 3-1 winners.

Coach Derek Nicholson commented….
‘It was very encouraging to see how the lads played. They worked hard for each other and games like this and the trip help to bond the team spirit. It was good to be able to give some game time to some of our younger players and the result sets us up well for our next fixture on Wednesday evening against Portugese opposition’
