MATCH PREVIEW – ALLOA ATHLETIC.
Posted August 22, 2014
Week 3 of the Championship see’s us return to Central Park with Alloa as our visitors with a 3 p.m. kick off. In the meetings between the sides last season Alloa beat us twice while under the charge of Paul Hartley.
An August visit to the Recs saw us go down 3-1 with Ben Gordon, Andy Kirk and Edward Ferns getting the Wasps goals, while Kane Hemmings got the Cowden counter.
Kevin Cawley and Kirk were then on target on Alloa’s first visit to Central Park in November which saw a 2-0 win for the Wasps.
Our second visit to Alloa saw a Hemmings goal separate the sides while the final game at Central Park in March saw a 2-2 draw.
Greg Stewart bagged a brace for us that afternoon with Graeme Holmes and Ryan McCord getting the Alloa goals.
MINUTES SILENCE
Before the game there will be a minutes silence to honour the memory of former Cowden player and manager Sammy Conn who sadly passed away earlier this week.
COWDEN FORM
Only Brechin City, in the Petrofac Training Cup tie, which went to extra time, have beaten us at Central Park since mid- January.
In the Championship so far we have drawn 2-2 at home to Falkirk while we went down to a 2-1 defeat at Livingston last Saturday.
ALLOA FORM
Barry Smith’s side have lost their opening two Championship games. At Palmerston Park on the opening day Queen of the South ran out 2-0 winners while last Saturday Raith Rovers won 1-0 at the Recs.
The Wasps have had better fortunes in the cup competitions. On Tuesday night they reached the Quarter Finals of the Petrofac Training Cup after beating local rivals Stirling Albion 2-1 at Forthbank after beating Arbroath 4-1 in the opening round at Gayfield.
Stirling were also beaten 1-0 at the Recs in the opening round of the League Cup and the Wasps will play Hamilton Accies in the second round.
PLAYER TO WATCH
GREIG SPENCE returned to Alloa in the summer and has so far scored six cup goals for the Wasps this season.
Last season the Inverkeithing based hit man scored four goals against us for Raith Rovers.
REFEREE
Taking charge of the game is Mr George Salmond who makes a swift return to Fife after being in charge of Tuesday night’s Dunfermline v Falkirk Petrofac Training Cup tie at East End Park.
This is Mr Salmond’s second game of the season at Central Park having been the man in the middle at our friendly game with Hearts.
