Two late Brechin City goals condemned Cowden to the drop in a heart-breaking end to a dramatic season at Central Park on Saturday afternoon.
The two sides went into the game all square after the 2-2 draw on Wednesday night and it was Brechin City who eventually came out on top after a nervy game.
A scrappy first half ended in stalemate but the Blue Brazil began to take control of the match after the break and put the away side under some intense pressure. However, it was Brechin who broke the deadlock against the run of play when Jamie Redman (78) sclaffed effort somehow found the back of the net via his shin.
Jimmy Nicholl's team pushed for an equaliser but were caught on the break with Craig Malloy showing great composure to slot home with 6 minutes remaining and clinch Brechin's place in the final against Ayr United.
It was a disappointing end to what has been a fantastic season. The Club were favourites for automatic relegation at the start of the season but more then held their own against full-time opponents for the majority of the season and narrowly missed out catching Ross County in 8th place. The management team and players can be proud of their efforts while the Club has made great strides off the field over the past year. Everyone will now need to re-group over the summer and get ready for the 2011/12 2nd Division campaign.
