Match Preview: Cowdenbeath v Dunfermline

Posted March 31, 2011

Its a Derby Special on Saturday at Central Park as local rivals Dunfermline Athletic make the short journey west to take on the Blue Brazil.  With both sides desperate for points this game is definitely a proverbial 6-pointer.

With our draw on Tuesday against Falkirk and Dunfermlines win away to Ross County comes a window of oppurtunity for either side - we have a chance to overtake County whiel the Pars headed to the top of the table and will be wanting to remain there.

It's been a rather one-sided season in terms of matches between the 2 sides this season. The opening match started so well for us with John Dempster calmly slotting us into an early lead to send the massive travelling support into delirium.  Unfortunately since then its been 11 goals conceded and 0 scored against our biggest rivals - 2-1 defeat followed by a 5-0 and 4-0 defeat which has left Cowden fans desperate for at least a point against our rivals.

In our llast 8 games we have scored in 6 of them in comparison to the 8 before were we only scored twice (a penalty and an own goal!).  The side have started to tighten the defence as well with our first 2 clean sheets in the league coming within 10 days of each other with a 1-0 win against Partick and our draw with Falkirk on Tuesday.

A good omen for the match is that we have kept a clean sheet in our last 2 matches played on this date:- a 1-0 win against Arbroath in 1994 and a 0-0 draw against Montrose in 2005. Can the Blue Brazil continue this tradition? Recent form would say otherwise with Dunfermline 2nd in the form charts with 13 points out of 24 in comparison to our 9.  Admittedly this isn't that big a difference as the league is such a tight affair with teams picking up points against one another. Our big issue is our home form is the worst in the league without a win at Central Park since November.  Dunfermline have the tied best away form recordover the past 5 games tied with Dundee.  Again another omen that the game is going to be a tough one!

Match of the day fact of the week:- Our 0-0 draw with Falkirk was our first scoreless draw this season. Our last game like that was in the play-offs at home to Brechin City.....we of course went on to win our next match 3-0.....
