Cowden matched Scottish Cup finalists Ross County all the way on the opening day of the season but two clincial finishes from the County forward line was the difference between the sides.
The sides cancelled each other out early and the best chance fell of the first half fell to Michael Gardyne but his glancing header was brilliantly pushed onto the post by David Hay.
The visitors took the lead 7 minutes after the interval thanks to a wonderfully crafted moved that ended with Paul Di Giacomo setting up Gardyne to smash the ball high into the net.
Cowden had their best spell of pressure following the goal and had a good shout turned down for a penalty before Di Giacomo (82) settled it with an angled drive from 12 yards.
